Come now, and let us reason together

Youth Ministry at Windermere Union Church

One of the questions I get a lot as youth minister (and have been getting for twenty years) is this one. “When are you going to be a “real” minister?” As if working with the youth is a stepping stone to something bigger. This is not true. Too often at too many churches teens are treated like they are Christians in training. This, also, is not true. Youth are not the future of the church, they ARE the church.

We embrace imagination, mission, and prayer in our youth group. I do not teach at a the front of a classroom. Being a Christian, as far as I am concerned, is about one beggar showing another where the food is. I am on my own journey and my goal is to find a way to make the walk meaningful enough for you to walk with me.

The youth group of our church encompasses students from Junior High through College. The junior highers (grades six thru eight) meet on Sundays from 4:00 to 5:30pm at the church building. The senior highers meet from 6:00 to 7:30.

There are multiple occasions where both groups may meet together for special events like Rock The Universe or on a joint local mission project. (We’ve made several trips together to Give Kids The World.)

The college students meet often but irregularly. Meeting times and locations vary from week to week. It might be a Monday afternoon at a coffee shop or late night at Perkins for pie and coffee. The best way to find out the “wheres” and the “whens” is to make sure I have your cellphone, face book, and email address.

Each Summer the youth groups take separate mission trips away from home. The Junior Highers usually take a full weekend and serve at a shelter or food pantry. We have been all over the state of Florida and have served hundreds of people over the years. The senior highers take a full week out of state to work and grow and become the hands and feet and eyes and ears of Christ in the world around us. In the past the senior highers have worked at homless shelters, restored a play ground in a low income housing facility, and painted a house that served as a transitional home for the homeless in Akron, Ohio.

We are an all encompassing, all accepting, all embracing, all journeying group. Everyone is welcome. As the book of Isaiah says, “Come now, and let us reason together.” Lets talk. Let’s walk. Let’s grow. Let’s learn. Let’s teach. Let’s serve. Let’s be one with each other and one with God.
