History (1916 - 1991)
Prepared by Roger Seidner, Minister Emeritus WUC

First Sunday School Group at the Windemere Union Church
1925 - 1926
In approximately 1911, early settlers in Windermere, Florida began a Christian witness. They met in the old school on Seventh Street. Itinerate ministers served the congregation until 1916 when eleven folk from various denominations covenanted to organize the Union Church of Windermere. An open spirit to all Christians, strong missions, cooperation with other churches and lay leadership were emphasized.
After World War I a building program resulted in the beautiful white sanctuary. It was dedicated in 1924 under live oak trees at the corner of Fifth and Oakdale streets.
In September 1924, when Windermere was incorporated, Governor John W. Martin spoke from the porch of the church. In 1961 the congregation extended its open witness by affiliation with the United Church of Christ.
The sanctuary and facilities have been restored and rededicated in celebration of seventy-five years.
